About Co. Kildare

If you’re moving to Kildare from elsewhere, here’s some interesting things to know about this unique county.

  • The name comes from the Irish, meaning church (Cill) of the oaks (Dara).
  • Co. Kildare was home of the powerful Fitzgerald family. Parts of the county were also part of The Pale.
  • Co. Kildare is mostly lowland. The Bog of Allen occupies a considerable portion of the county. It is habitat to over 185 plant and animal species.
  • The Curragh plain in Co. Kildare is composed of sandy soil with excellent drainage. It measures 5,000 acres, or almost 20km². Its span is from Kildare Town to Newbridge.
  • For the film King Arthur, a replica of Hadrian’s Wall was built Ballymore Eustace in county Kildare. It was 1 kilometre long, 40 feet high and had a 10 foot wide walkway on top. It took 300 crew members four months to build.
  • With racecourses at Punchestown, Naas and the Curragh, Co. Kildare is the centre of the Irish horse industry. Several prominent international breeders have substantial stud farms in Kildare.
  • The nickname for the Kildare GAA team is the Lilywhites, because early jerseys were made from the bags of the Lilywhite Bakery.
